The President of the Republic has called on the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission to recover an estimated 4 billion US dollars which he said were stolen by current and former officials in the Government.

President Salva Kiir wrote a letter dated May 3 of which CRN obtained a copy today saying the people of South Sudan and the international community are alarmed by the level of corruption in South Sudan.

He said the credibility of his government has been put on the line.

President Kiir explained that estimated 4 billion US dollar are unaccounted for, simply stolen by current and former officials and corrupt individuals with close ties to the Government.

He said most of these funds have been deposited in foreign accounts and some are used for purchasing properties that were paid in cash.

President Kiir added that he has written to eight governments to assist in recovering these stolen funds and that the government has opened a bank account in Kenya for corrupt people to deposit the money in.

He promised that if the funds are returned the Government will grant amnesty to the people involved and keep their names secret.

President Kiir warned that the government will continue to investigate the stolen money and will hold accountable officials and individuals who refused to return the funds they have taken.

The Anti-corruption Commission has recovered some 60 million US dollars from many fraudulent transactions and misappropriation of funds by Government institutions.
