Magwi County Police released three women arrested on suspension of witchcraft practices.

The women were held as key suspects but three men were shortly released after their arrest, last week, Radio Emmanuel reported.

The suspects were accused of extracting snake venom to make poison.

Investigations carried by detectives at Magwi police station found the women not guilty.

Magwi paramount chief Mich Oloya said the investigations were done according to law and none of the suspects was found guilty.

He added that the women were kept in prison to protect them from mob justice.

Investigation officer Ochaya Denis said no one testified against the suspects to incriminate them of witchcraft.

Rights activists led by UNMISS Civil Affairs team, UN Human Rights groups and civil society organizations in Eastern Equatoria state raised concern over the prolonged detention of the three women after they were cleared of any crime.
