The Government plans to establish a programme called Payam Youth Service that will mobilize young men and women to help transform both social development and livelihoods in every payam across the country.
The programme to be launched by the national ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports in collaboration with two UN agencies aims at creating opportunities of employment for the youth.Payam Youth Service is one of the 20 priorities of South Sudan Development Plan.
Nick Waterman, UN International Labour Organization’s senior advisor, told CRN that the service will target unemployed youths aged between 15 and 35 to contribute to the good of their communities.
The participants will work in reproductive heath, literacy, small credit schemes and small building construction and the programmes are organized and managed by the payams.
Dr Waterman said the Payam Youth Service will start with a pilot programme and will be extended to the whole country in a later phase.
He added that the service will run for two years and will be jointly funded by the Government and some UN agencies.
