The ministry of finance has complained that the mobile operator Vivacell failed to pay the exercise duty taxes introduced by the new Taxation Act.

Vivacell CEO refused to answer CRN whether his company was exempted from paying taxes.

Instead, he rushed to the Undersecretary at the Telecommunication Ministry, Juma Stephen, and told him that he was asked about things concerning bilateral agreements between Vivacell and the minister and he would not want to talk about it.

Undersecretary Juma Stephen explained to CRN that the issue of Vivacell came up when the national ministry of finance complained that the company was not paying its exercise duty taxes.

He said both sides met and Vivacell was told to pay the newly introduced exercise duty taxes like the other operators.

Mr Stephen added that the exercise duty tax was new.

He said before mobile operators were asked to pay only value added taxes.
