A group of 33 health workers who completed a five-day training on maternal and antenatal care received their certificates in Yambio on Friday.

The training was organized by UNDP in collaboration with the Western Equatoria state ministry of health and involved nurses, midwives and clinical officers working with pregnant mothers, and newborn babies.

The state director general of health Victor Furangi told Radio Anisa that the 33 participants came from various health facilities across the state and followed a first group of 26 health workers who were trained some time ago.

Mergan Abdallah, a gynaecologist at Juba Teaching Hospital, was one of the trainers. He explained that the training intends to address issues related to maternal mortality that is the highest in South Sudan.

He added that in a survey conducted in 2010 in South Sudan, Western Equatoria state had the highest maternal mortality rate with an approximated number of 2,300 per 1,000 deliveries.

The state director of health awarded certificates to all the participants and encouraged them to implement all the skills and information they learned during the training.
