Animals and forests have faced improvements in Western Equatoria since peace returned to the region.
Yambio County Inspector of Wildlife, Major Johnson Paul, told Anisa FM yesterday that his department is facing many challenges but there were improvements in Western Equatoria State’s nature. He said during the war many wild animals fled to the neighbouring countries and others were killed.
He added that the Ambororo people and the rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army pose some obstacles to the wildlife.
Major Johnson explained that after the independence of South Sudan, the Wildlife department adopted new rules and regulations to protect all parks and reserves in the state and their elephants, buffaloes, zebras and chimpanzees.
He said some rhino footmarks were detected in Yangiri payam but the animals were not sighted yet.
Major Johnson urged citizens to seek permission from the Wildlife Department for hunting.
He called on people to stop illegal cutting of trees to preserve the environment.
Major Johnson explained that whoever cuts one tree must plant five new ones.
