The South Sudanese Army signed an agreement with the UN yesterday renewing its commitment to release all children within its ranks.
The National Ministry of Defence, UNMISS, UNICEF, and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict signed the new action plan.Radhika Coomaraswamy, who heads UN’s Children and Armed Conflict division, said both the army and all armed groups who accepted the amnesty vowed to release their child soldiers.
UNICEF representative in South Sudan Yasmin Ali Haque added that the army is moving in the right direction concerning the protection and well-being of children in South Sudan.
She called for a successful and sustainable reintegration of child soldiers into the civil society.
