Primary school teachers in Juba are lamenting lack of space to accommodate thousands of children who want to enrol for the new academic year.

Juba’s underage population has increased after southerners returned from Sudan and the neighbouring countries.

Mama Angelica, the headmistress of Sacred Heart Kindergarten, told Bakhita Radio that many children want to join her school but admissions were limited due to lack of space.

She explained that Sacred Heart Kindergarten admitted only 160 out of over 560 children who applied for a place.

The headmistress said it was sad to see children going back home without a place in the school.

She asked for new schools to allow children to have access to education.

Patrick Edema, an officer at Juba Model Basic School, said his school is trying to fix temporary structures to find a place for the growing number of pupils.

Primary schools in Juba started registration last month unlike previous years when it began in mid March.

By now it is difficult to find free spaces for children to enrol in most schools in Juba.
