Members of the international organization Women for Women in Lakes State were joined by State dignitaries and other people at William’s Bridge to advocate for peace ahead of the International Women’s Day.
William’s Bridge, popularly known is Kubr William is located on the Rumbek√ɬêWau road in an area bordering Dinka Gok and Dinka Agar communities.The participants gathered under the theme “Join Women on the Bridge” with the aim of reconciling the warring communities in the area.
An officer from Women for Women International in Lakes State, Juliet Tunje, told Good News Radio that the gathering at the bridge aimed to advocate for peace in the communities within Lakes State.
She explained that peace can be best achieved through education.
Ms Tunje said social issues, including the challenges of the girl child and women, can be addressed only in a peaceful context.
She acknowledged the vital role of women in development and advocated for formal education of girls and boys.
Ms Tunje called on the community to embrace peace to guarantee mutual respect for human rights and freedoms.
Another officer, Abraham Agoth, called for the education of women in regular schools and through adult literacy classes.
He insisted on the value of education for all members of the community, underlining that there is no age limit to education.
The Saturday event at Kubr William was one of the activities planned by various Rumbek-based organizations to mark this year’s International Women’s Day due on Thursday.
The other activities planned include the awareness on women’s rights and the issue of Gender Based Violence, distribution of relevant material, marches, speeches and cultural dances.
