The AU chief has appealed to South Sudan and Sudan to adopt processes for the acquisition of nationality and relevant immigration documentation that are efficient and accessible to individuals.

The Transitional period ends in April 8 and over 500,000 Southerners are still living in the Sudan in an unclear status.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Jean Ping, followed closely the talks on nationality convened by the AU Panel between representatives of the governments of South Sudan and the Government in Addis Ababa.

The talks took place from 12 to 15 February and focused on joint actions to address the status and treatment of the nationals of each State residing within the territory of the other State.

Mr Ping asked the two governments to consider the welfare and rights of all citizens, South Sudanese and Sudanese, residing in either state.

The discussions also addressed the important concept of the Four Freedoms, which would permit the movement, residence, economic activity and ownership of property within the territories of the two States.
