Early pregnancy and illegal sex are some of the obstacles to girl child education in South Sudan.

Lakes State Education Minister Daniel Ayual Makoi told Good News Radio that girl child education has been affected by early pregnancies and rampant sexual misconduct, between girls and teachers or other staff in the entire country.

Mr Ayual said the national Ministry of General Education is preparing a Girl Child Education Bill to strengthen girls’ rights to education without interference from the society.

He appealed to all citizens of Lakes State to take girl child education as their collective responsibility.

Mr Ayual advised girls not to engage in pre-marital sex that ruins their chances of continuing with education.

The minister added that it was wrong for teachers or anybody to infringe the right of a girl to education by having sex or impregnating her.

He said teachers who impregnate girls will be banned from the profession.

Mr Ayual made this appeal after returning from a workshop attended by all ten State Ministers of Education on the Girl Child Education Bill.
