A local organisation is empowering women and youths in South Sudan by promoting the production and sale of traditional and cultural arts and crafts.

Roots Project manager Tuwa Lina told CRN News that the local organization aims at empowering the most vulnerable in the community through arts and crafts.

She added that the project started as an answer to the lack of traditional arts and crafts objects, including traditional jewellery and clothing, in the markets in Juba.

Ms Lina explained that the shops were selling mostly stuff imported from Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia.

Ms Lina added that the Roots Project gives South Sudanese people the possibility to wear their traditional cloths and ornaments instead of importing them from neighbouring countries.

She said the NGO also allows vulnerable people with traditional skills to have a job and earn some money for them and for their families.

The Root Project is mobilizing women and young people in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Greater Equatoria, Jonglei and Lakes State.

The articles are on sale in its shop in Juba.
