Early marriage practices among the communities in Yei River County are a major challenge affecting girl child education.

County Director of Education Charles Lomuri Justin told Radio Easter that girls’ enrolment in lower primary schools is quite high but the numbers drop as they progress through the classes.

He pointed the finger to early marriage and other economic factors that lead girls to drop out from school.

Mr Lomuri said girl child education has become a priority for his department.

He explained that county officials have been sensitizing communities in the different payams about the benefits of girl child education.

Mr Lumori appealed to parents and caretakers to encourage girls to study and stop considering them as immediate sources of income through marriage.
