The Rumbek National Secondary School was reopened yesterday after a nearly five-month closure.

Lakes State Governor Chol Tong Mayay explained during the reopening that the school was closed due to lack of food.

Last September, some students from the National Secondary School staged a peaceful demonstration in Lakes State Legislative Assembly demanding its reopening.

They later held a violent strike which led to the destruction of some equipment at the State’s Ministry of Education premises.

Eng Tong wondered whether the students had apologized for the unnecessary destruction caused during the strike.

He reminded those present that it would be wrong for anyone to ask for something from their parent through violent means.

Deputy Governor and Minister for education Daniel Ayual Makoi advised the students to avoid taking tribal differences to the school, adding that tribal fights would be a sign of indiscipline among students.

He welcomed positive criticism from the students, reminding them that criticism would bear good fruits if expressed constructively.

Rumbek National Secondary students started their holidays in August last year without sitting for their end of term exams.

The school remained closed until yesterday.

There were claims that the Rumbek National Secondary School did not receive any financial support from the national Government from the beginning of year 2011.
