TORIT PRIEST ACCOUNTS FOR CHURCH CONSTRUCTION FUNDS

With 2011 coming to an end, the Catholic parish priest of Our Lady of Assumption in Torit displayed a spirit of transparency by making public the financial contributions of Christians towards church’s construction.

Fr Martin Madrara said that a total of 66,846 South Sudanese pounds has been raised between July 2007 to November 2011 from weekly collections commonly referred to as “We are the Church”, Radio Emmanuel reported.

He added that it includes private contributions by individuals towards the construction of a new Our Lady of Assumption Church.

The financial report issued by the cleric indicates that the contractor received 132,300 US Dollars to start the construction.

Fr Madrara said another 380,200 pounds were added later to continue the works.

The parish priest stated that the church is left with a total of over 135,180 pounds and 1,936 dollars deposited at Kenya Commercial Bank, Nile Commercial Bank and in the church box.

Fr Madrara, who is known of his tough stands on transparency and accountability, sparked applause from the Christians when he stated that those interested were free to scrutinize the full report containing the details of the weekly collections and expenses.
