More than 20 people were killed in Raja County, Western Bahr el-Ghazal state, during the Christmas period.

Raja County Commissioner Rizik Dominic Samuel told Radio Voice of Hope by phone yesterday that 15 civilians and eight soldiers lost their lives between December 20 and 26 and another three soldiers were injured.

He said among the dead there were two girls captured and raped by the Ugandan rebels of the LRA, the Lord’s Resistance Army.

Mr Rizic explained that Sudanese militias and LRA elements are the cause of insecurity in Raja County.

He said the roads and telecommunications are very poor and the area has a huge border with both Central Africa and the Sudan.

Mr Rizic pointing out that these issues cannot be handled by the county authorities alone, but need the involvement of state and national governments.

The commissioner reiterated his sorrow and presented condolences to the families of the victims.
