Japan is participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan with a military engineering unit.
The Japanese government yesterday decided to contribute with up to 330 personnel to UNMISS, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan said in a statement.The Japanese engineering unit will work to improve infrastructure, including maintenance and repair of roads.
Two Japanese officers are already in South Sudan making preparation for the unit’s arrival.
Up to 40 military personnel will be posted in South Sudan, Uganda and Kenya, to support the engineering unit in transportation and supply and to coordinate with the UN and South Sudanese government agencies.
The statement added that the Government of Japan recognizes that peace and stability of South Sudan are important for the peace and stability of Africa.
