The national ministry of commerce, trade and investment has called on the traders to stop exploiting local consumers by cheating on weights.

Director General of Standard and Metrology in the ministry of Commerce Mary Gordon told Bakhita Radio yesterday that traders in Konyokonyo and other markets in Juba are cheating local shoppers by selling bags with fewer kilos of goods than those announced in the labels.

She revealed that an inspection found out that bags of flour marked 50 kg in fact had only 35 or 40 kg.

Ms Gordon said the act is a coordinated practice among traders selling flour in Juba.

She warned that anybody caught in such malpractices would answer before the court of law when the Consumer Protection Bill comes into force next month.

Ms Gordon advised citizens to ask traders to weigh the bags of flour and other products before paying for them.

Ms. Gordon said traders sell the stolen flour from imported bags in unmarked sacks and this is illegal.

She added that every bag should be clearly labelled.
