The National Legislative Assembly postponed today’s debate to approve the appointments of Auditor General and two heads of commission because there were not enough MPs in the House to conduct the session.
On November 12, President Salva Kiir Mayardit signed a number of decrees relieving and appointing chairpersons of independent commissions and institutions.
The president reappointed Steven Kilona Wondu as Auditor General and Lawrence Kodis Korbandy as head of Human Rights Commission. Dr Pauline Riak was replaced as chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Commission by Justice John Gatwich Lul.
However, the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan says that before being appointed by the president, the Auditor General has to receive the approval of two thirds of MPs from the National Assembly while the heads of Anti-Corruption and Human Rights commissions need a simple majority endorsement.
The MPs were supposed to vote today the names put forward by President Kiir for the posts of Auditor General and Anti-Corruption and Human Rights Commission chairpersons.
