The leader of a local organisation that advocates for the rights of people with disabilities is calling on the government to pay more attention to the vulnerable.

Daniel Deng, who directs the Deng Foundation, told CRN News that almost one third of South Sudan’s population suffers from some form of disability, while over a million are affected by blindness.

He said nothing has changed since the country became independent in July and called on government to strengthen policies and provide funds to cater for the welfare of people with disabilities.

Mr. Deng argued that commissions catering for war disabled people have been well funded while people suffering fro other types of disabilities like polio and accidents are neglected by the government.

Mr. Deng added that the government and the private sector should empower people with disabilities and include them in the development process by providing jobs and appointing them to leadership position.
