Two journalists from The Destiny newspaper were released yesterday after spending two weeks in detention without charges over a piece of opinion criticizing the President of the Republic.

Dengdit Ayok and Ngor Garang were arrested on November 2 by the National Security Services over an article Mr. Ayok wrote in The Destiny criticizing President Salva Kiir Mayardit over the wedding of his first daughter to an Ethiopian national.

The Destiny was also suspended despite of a letter of apology published in the newspaper.

The two journalists were taken yesterday to the Inspector General of Police, Lieutenant General Acuil Tito Madut, before their release.

Gen. Tito asked the two journalists to sign statements saying they will refrain from writing on any private issues otherwise they go back to prison.

Mr Dengdit said he was accused of mobilizing the people against President Kiir, and working with the opposition.
