The Commonwealth Foundation is to build civil society capacity in South Sudan as the process for full accreditation might take a long time.

Commonwealth Foundation Director Dhananjayan Sriskandaraja said today in Juba that the Government of South Sudan wants to join the organization and the foreign minister was invited to attend the last Commonwealth Summit in Australia as observer.

He said leaders at the Commonwealth Summit last have shown appreciation to South Sudan’s request to join the body but the processes of accreditation will take years before South Sudan is fully admitted.

Dr Dhananjayan said his visit to Juba was to see the possibility for the Commonwealth Foundation to develop the capacity of civil society and strengthen the local media.

The Commonwealth of Nations is an association of 52 countries that belonged to the British Empire together with Rwanda and Mozambique.

It was formed in 1949 to promote dialogue, good governance, democracy and partnership to meet international development challenges.
