Over 1,000 people have received training in matters related to the conservation of the environment, including primary school teachers and other members of the local communities within the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek.
Assistant Education Field Coordinator of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, Arnold Rapango, told Good News Radio that his team reached out to 351 teachers and over 700 other community members through a series of workshops that concluded last Friday. He said the environment of South Sudan may suffer further due to development and industrialization, cutting of trees to open roads and other infrastructure and pollution from industries that may be established in the region.
The workshops aimed at equipping the community with relevant information that can ensure a balanced ecosystem.
Mr. Rapango noted with concern the shortage of properly trained teachers in almost all the schools the team visited, posing a serious threat to the quality of education in the new nation.
He said many teachers did not know how to teach about environment due to lack of a concrete syllabus on the subject.
This was the second year the Education Department in the Diocese of Rumbek conducted workshops on environmental conservation in partnership with the European Union.
