A group of students of Rumbek National Secondary School on Monday staged a violent demonstration by storming the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and destroying properties.

The protesting students are demanding the immediate reopening of their school.

Private Secretary of Lakes State Minister of Education David Diardit told Good News Radio that at least 50 students got into ministry’s compound, vandalized valuable office equipments and physically assaulted some employees.

Mayor Kot Atol, one of the demonstrating students, said their demonstration was peaceful explaining that they had gone to the State Legislative Assembly, to the SPLM Secretariat but they failed to address the issues.

He added the state assembly told them they were not for students issues but o implement the law.

Lakes State Police Commissioner Sayid Chawul Lom urged the students to desist from violent means of resolving their grievances, explaining that a violent approach betrays the students’ desire to become the future leaders.

Over two weeks ago, the students had warned that they would turn the peaceful demonstration violent and destructive if their grievances were not addressed.

The school did not reopen due to lack of food for the boarders.
