A total of 1,600 guns have been collected in Lakes State since the disarmament began early last month, said the Lakes State governor.

Governor Chol Tong Mayay said citizens handed the guns by themselves.

He added that the guns were transported to the SPLA headquarters in Juba as it was agreed by the disarmament team after complains that the army return some weapons to civilians after the disarmament exercise.

The governor urged the commissioners of all eight counties in Lakes State to talk to their youths so that the remaining arms are collected and the international community witnesses the transportation process.

The speaker of Lakes State Legislative Assembly John Marik Makur said the remaining task ahead is to ask the governors of Jonglei, Unity, Warrap and Western Equatorial to disarm their civilians.

The 1, 600 arms came from four counties of Cuibet, Rumbek Centre, Rumbek East and Wullu.

Rumbek North and Greater Yirol counties are yet to give up their illegal guns.
