Eastern Equatoria State Legislative Assembly has passed a bill to outlaw import and consumption of alcoholic drinks packed in plastic sachets and day drinking in the State.

The bill was voted after a one and half hour discussion on a motion moved by Elizabeth Tulio Adodo, the Chairperson of Members Affairs committee in the State Assembly, Emmanuel Radio reported.

Speaker Ambrose Emmanuel Ocholimoi summarized the content of the bill in four points: it forbids drinking alcohol during working hours; alcoholic drinks packed in plastic sachets are not allowed to enter Eastern Equatoria; it forbids selling alcohol in plastic sachets; and those who break the law shall be fined.

The bill reaffirms a ban on illegal liquor approved in 2006.

Mr. Ocholimoi explained that residents of Magwi, Seretenya and Isohe have increased the import of illegal alcoholic drinks from neighbouring countries.

MPs directed county commissioners to abide by the resolutions and take measures against people who break the law.
