Over 760 guns were collected from civilians in an ongoing disarmament exercise in Cueibet County of Lakes State and the local authorities are satisfied with the operation’s progress.
Disarmament was launched 12 days ago in Cueibet County, targeting its eight payams.Cueibet County Commissioner Isaac Mayom Malik told Good News Radio over the phone that 765 guns have so far been collected from the civilians.
He praised the remarkable cooperation between army and civilians during the exercise.
Mr. Mayom attributed the cooperation to the awareness campaigns carried out prior to the disarmament operation.
He added that the security officers involved in the operation are satisfied with the results that he described as successful.
Mr. Mayom said the area is already relieved of armed conflicts and insecurity incidents which had, for the last three years, threatened to tear the county apart.
He added that there is already freedom of movement in the County with civilians not in need of carrying around weapons, including spears.
There were no reports of insecurity in the recent past.
Mr. Mayom said the disarmament operation will soon conclude its first phase involving the army and local authorities.
The second phase will be solely under the SPLA.
