A committee investigating tax collection malpractices in South Sudan found 65 unauthorized institutions collecting taxes in the country alongside with 44 official bodies.
The fact finding committee chaired by energy minister Stephen Dhieu reported that taxes on imported essential goods and services are the main cause for the high cost of living in South Sudan.The committee made some proposal that include the establishment of a Revenue Authority at the national and state levels; immediate removal of unnecessary checkpoints and road blocks; and elimination of illegal tax collecting units from all border entries and checkpoints.
The committee also proposed a list of 61 posts in the ten states where official customs clearance can be made.
The resolutions were presented to the Economic Cluster of the Cabinet of South Sudan meeting chaired by the Vice President Riek Machar Teny.
