The minister of finance and economic planning for Abyei said his government is encouraging the residents to cultivate in the places where they took refuge after Sudanese troops occupied the area.

Since the occupation of Abyei in May, many residents fled into Agok, south of Kiir River, in South Sudan.

Acuil Akol Miyan told Bakhita Radio that his office is making a joint effort with the ministry of agriculture in the area to help Abyei people cultivate their own food, including sorghum and maize.

He lamented that heavy rains destroyed some farms.

Mr. Akol explained that the government is trying to keep prices down by securing food stocks of sorghum, sugar, oil and other commodities to supply the local traders.

Mr. Akol is one of the officials appointed by the former Government of National Unity to administer Abyei.

President Omar Al-Bashir dissolved the Abyei Administration and appointed a military governor after the Sudan Armed Forces occupied the enclave in May.
