The department of agriculture in Yei River County has been working very hard with the farmers and NGOs to produce enough food this year since agriculture is the backbone of the county.

Commissioner for agriculture Edimon Gogo told Easter Radio that there are 90 farmers associations, 50 cooperatives, 16 community based farmers organizations and 105 self-help farmers groups in the five payams of Yei River County.

He said the main food crops produced by the farmers include maize, sorghum, groundnuts, beans, rice, sim-sim and cassava.

Mr. Gogo explained that famers encounter many challenges including poor means of transport and lack of tractors.

He added that lack of credit facilities and theft are affecting farmers too.

Mr. Gogo urged people to avoid overdependence on foreign commodities and stick to domestic cultivation to ensure food security.

He asked farmers to form cooperatives and associations to lobby for support from the government and NGOs.
