The national ministry of health has pointed out areas of immediate concern in combating major causes of maternal mortality and other diseases in South Sudan.

Cholera, measles, meningitis, diarrhoea and AIDS are now reported to be the leading causes of death in South Sudan, Bakhita Radio reported.

Health educator Rebecca Aloung said citizens need to know the causes of some diseases and the ministry is preparing messages on the diseases that affect the people, including alcohol consumption.

Ms. Aloung said waterborne diseases are preventable through proper and safe use of the available river water after it is purified or boiled.

She said over 116 thousand people in South Sudan are estimated to be living with HIV and AIDS.

Ms. Aloung added the ministry is working to develop messages to alert parents and the community at large to take precautionary measures to prevent illnesses.
