The Transitional Constitution which was passed last night ignored the promise made by the SPLM leadership to grant 30 percent of all political positions at all levels to women, the so called women’s affirmative action.

SPLM MP Betty Achan Ogwaro told SCR News that women were hoping that the current minimum 25 percent quota would be uplifted to 30 percent during the approval of the Law.

She blamed male lawyers for the turn face regarding women’s representation.

Ms. Achan added that the women MPs did not feel betrayed by the president and they will work hard to get their pledged percentage.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit pledged to raise the women’s affirmative action from 20 to 30 percent during his inauguration speech as the first elected president of South Sudan.
