Hundreds of war veterans and widows marched on the streets of Rumbek in a show of satisfaction and joy for what can be described as √É’mission accomplished’.

The Tuesday march started at the State Legislative Assembly, and went through Rumbek up to the State Secretariat.

Governor Chol Tong Mayay praised the veterans and widows’ heroic display, acknowledging their instrumental role in the journey to Independence.

He said it was the veterans’ sacrifices that made July 9 possible.

Eng. Tong added that the heroes were there to remind those who had already forgotten the price paid to achieve the independence of South Sudan.

The Governor reminded the wounded heroes that the South Sudan’s national flag to be officially hoisted this Saturday is a fulfilment of the prophecy by t late Dr. John Garang, who said South Sudan belonged to those who lost arms and legs and that they would be witnesses to this event.

Eng. Tong also stressed the need for constant vigilance, especially during the days left before independence.

He said there could be people he described as hooligans, keen on disrupting the celebrations.

Eng. Tong promised the jubilant veterans and widows a bull for each of the remaining days.

He encouraged them to march daily until when the flag of South Sudan will be hoisted to mark the birth of the Republic of South Sudan.
