The President of the Government of South Sudan left this morning for Equatorial Guinea to take part in the African Union’s executive council.

The nineteenth Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council is being held in Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea. The meeting started last Thursday and concludes on Friday under the theme “Accelerating Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development.”

GoSS spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press this morning that Salva Kiir Mayardit was invited to attend the AU meeting to brief the African heads of state on Abyei, borders, debt, security arrangements and the importance of a good relationship with the Republic of Sudan.

Dr. Marial added that the invite was a good opportunity for President Kiir to be introduced into the AU family.

The Republic of South Sudan will be AU’s member number 54 after its independence on July 9.
