A senior opposition figure in Khartoum says he will retire from active politics after South Sudan is declared independent.

Bona Malual is the founder of the Southern Front Movement now called the South Sudan Democratic Front, the first party that sought self-determination from Khartoum.

He told SCR News over the telephone from Khartoum that he will resign from active politics because his party’s vision of self-determination will be achieved.

Mr. Malual warned that the recent political events in Abyei and Southern Kordofan should not be allowed to sabotage the declaration of independence of South Sudan.

Mr. Malual advised South Sudan’s leaders to ensure that people share the peace dividends including development, social services, peace and tranquillity.

Mr. Malual made a public statement early in the week in Khartoum announcing his retirement from politics.
