The EU chief election observer has called upon the Government of Southern Sudan to fight corruption and prioritise the protection of human rights ahead of independence.

Veronique De Keyser told the press today in Juba that South Sudan has a challenge to combine independence and development with political pluralism and the rule of law.

She urged the government to fight corruption and respect human rights.

Ms. Keyser said the transition period should be an opportunity to create a new legal framework for both the Constitution and an electoral law together with new administrative bodies.

The EU chief observer added that this is the time to put in place new legal structures.

She warned that what is decided today will influence the future of South Sudan.
