The UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan known as UNMIS is relocating from North to South Sudan after the NCP asked them to leave the country before the independence of South Sudan.

UNMIS was established in 2005 to ensure that both Juba and Khartoum governments would respect and implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Last month, the UN Security Council extended the UNMIS mandate until July 9.

Khartoum says UNMIS mandate in North Sudan ends with the independence of the South.

Northern media reported that the mission began transferring its equipment from Kadugli, Damazin, Port Sudan, Khartoum and El-Obeid to Juba.

Meanwhile, the government of Juba is asking UNMIS to engage more in civilian capacity building activities after the independence.

On March 31, UNMIS had 10,445 total uniformed personnel including 9,277 troops, 467 military observers and 701 police officers supported by 1,036 international civilian personnel, 2,795 local civilian staff and 464 United Nations Volunteers.
