South Sudan security agents seized copies of a newspaper to quash a story quoting rebel claims that they would attack Juba, the editor-in-chief said today.

Michael Koma, editor of The Juba Post newspaper said that security officials said they objected to the story, and so they seized 2,500 copies of the newspaper at the airport.

The Juba Post’s Thursday edition carried a story quoting rebels loyal to renegade George Athor claiming they would launch a major offensive against Juba.

Mr. Koma said the paper was simply doing its job, revealing fears of getting arrested.

He added that he was questioned by security officers about the story and told them that they are journalists reporting what people say.

Government officials were not immediately available for comment, but have in the past said they support the freedom of the press.
