GoSS president sent a message of condolences and solidarity on behalf of the people of South Sudan to the prime-minister of Japan after the massive catastrophe that befell on the north-east of the country.

On Friday, an enormous earthquake followed by a destructive tsunami killed thousands, displaced hundreds of thousands and caused massive destruction in north-east Japan.

GoSS information minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press yesterday that Salva Kiir Mayardit wrote a letter of condolences to Japan’s prime-minister.

He underlined that Japan has been assisting South Sudan in development and humanitarian areas since 2005 and it is financing new bridges in Juba.

Dr. Marial said the ambassador of Japan in Khartoum came to Juba to thank Mr. Kiir for his message.

He added that the tragedy forced a 50-member strong Japanese trade delegation made up of government and business people to cancel a trip to Juba.
