Traders in Rumbek yesterday decided after a long meeting to cut prices of foodstuff.
The resolution was made after the traders met for close to five hours to discuss the market situation and the plight of the common people trying to make their living.Christopher Tabu, one of the traders at the meeting, told Good News Radio that the merchants resolved to reduce the prices of food items.
He said 50-Kg bags of maize flour and sugar are five Sudanese pounds cheaper while a half-litter bottle of soda costs one pound less.
Mr. Tabu explained that multiple taxations and high transport cost were among the factors that made food so expensive in Rumbek.
He maintained that traders were there to serve the community and a good relationship between traders and the government would boost their service to the local community.
Mr. Tabu urged the government to make US dollars available to enable traders to buy goods from neighbouring countries.
The five-hour long meeting was attended by over 200 traders.
