South Sudan does not have radar facilities in place to control its airspace after independence.

South Sudan director of airports Kur Koul Ajieu told SCR News this morning that there is no radar system yet in the region.

However, he said the government wants to make sure the South will have its own radar before the end of July 9.

Mr. Koul said Juba International Airport is being prepared to receive the invited guests for the celebration of independence.

The works on the new terminal resumed last week after a two-year halt and the VIP lounge will be renovated.

The airports chief added that the two-kilometer runway will have lights for night operations before July 9.

Mr. Koul said some companies have offered to do the electrification work and the government has yet to decide to whom entrust the work.

He added that today a delegation came from Khartoum to assess the electrification work.

Juba International Airport closes before sunset due to lack of landing and other lights to assist crews’ operations.
