A member of the clergy from the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba was consecrated bishop yesterday at St. Theresa’s Cathedral in a long, colourful and moving ceremony.

The College of Catholic Bishops in the Sudan was very well represented in a packed Cathedral and surrounding areas, Bakhita FM reported.

Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro of Juba was the principal consecrator of Bishop Santo Laku Pio, assisted by Bishop Erkolano Lodu Tombe of Yei and Bishop Rudolf Deng Majak of Wau.

Archbishop Lukudu said during his homily that the Auxiliary Bishop was ordained to make the service of the Word of God more effective in the archdiocese of Juba and in the whole world.

He added that the ordination of the new bishop makes clear that Jesus loves the Church of Juba very much.

Archbishop Lukudu called on his Auxiliary Bishop to proclaim the message of God everywhere and act as guardian of his faithful.

Bishop Santo on his turn called on his fellow priests and seminarians to be strong in faith despite the many challenges they face.

He assured them that there are still many bishops to be consecrated for South Sudan.

Bishop Santo, 42, is the first Auxiliary Bishop ordained in the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba.
