School principals from the various Rumbek diocesan schools reported about the care they have for girl pupils.

The school principals presented their annual reports to the participants at the ongoing assembly of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, Good News Radio said.

Sr. Mary Magdalene Mulonga, the Principal of Rumbek’s St. Comboni Primary School spoke about Girls Education Movement, called GEM, describing it as “a movement of life-copying skills”.

She said the movement aims at promoting the education of girls through daily interaction that includes awareness about the development changes in their bodies.

Sr. Mulonga clarified that in promoting the girl child, the institution does not neglect the boy child.

The Principal of Agangrial’s St. Comboni Primary School, Sr. Rita Prescovia Nabukeera, said her school is preparing special programmes for girls aged between seven and twelve by involving them in liturgical dances and serving at mass.

The sister also reported that girls who are twelve years and above will be initiated in other special programs like embroidery and cookery.

Sr. Orla Treacy, the Principal of Rumbek Loreto Girls’ Secondary School, reported that out of the 53 students enrolled last year, seven dropped out due to pregnancy, marriage and health issues.

Sr. Orla observed that many of the students dropping out were older in age.

She added that older students will be allowed to complete their schooling, but the administration is considering adopting a policy to put an age limit to candidates.

Sr. Orla said three girls who dropped out due to pregnancy and got married are continuing their secondary education at Mapuordit Secondary School.
