Tension in Fangak County, Jonglei state, remain high following last week’s clashes between forces loyal to renegade George Athor and SPLA soldiers.

SPLA Maj. James Kuol told Voice of Love in Malakal that the situation in Fangak County was calm due to the presence of SPLA forces but residents moved to Tonga and other areas for safety.

He urged people to return to Fangak.

Maj. Kuol said the SPLA command is in Fangak area and Mr. Athor is based near a village called Kolnyang.

He added that the Athor’s group threatens to attack the SPLA forces in Fangak again.

Maj. Kuol who was in Fangak yesterday morning said children and women are separated from their fathers and husbands.

He added that many civilians have lost their lives and properties were looted and houses set on fire by Athor’s soldiers during the clashes in the area.

GoSS Humanitarian Affairs Minister James Kok, who has just returned from Fangak, told the AP news agency that 201 people were killed in what he termed a “massacre”.
