GoSS Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare is preparing a comprehensive survey about street children across South Sudan with the collaboration of Unicef and the University of Juba.
Director of Planning Stephen Bichiok told SCR News that the study follows a preliminary survey the Ministry conducted mainly in Juba and Wau.Mr. Bichiok said most street children in Juba come from Terekeka and Kapoeta while in Wau they are from Aweil and Kuajok.
He added that the ministry trained 132 social workers from the ten states of South Sudan to work with street children at local level.
The ministry plans to prepare another 20 councilors to work with kids in the streets of South Sudan.
The officials are working at open centres for street children and in prisons to identify minors among inmates.
So far, 18 children ere freed from Rumbek prison.
