A leading Catholic congregation is establishing an Agricultural Training School in Rumbek to provide skills to youth interested in crop and animal production.

Jesuit Fr. Francis Njuguna is in charge of the project’s development, Good News radio reported.

Fr. Njuguna told the diocesan assembly that the school called Multi-Educational and Agricultural Jesuit Institute of Sudan (MAJIS) is being established at Akoljal Village, close to Rumbek.

He said the local community asked for the school and gave a 1.2 square kilometres’ plot of land to that end.

Fr. Njuguna added that the training will target local youth and it involves lessons in crop production and the raising of animals and practical training.

Each course takes one year divided into three terms and the institution will be able to take 100 students at a time.

Bishop Caesar Mazzolari said Lakes State government welcomed the project finding it relevant to the local people who are mainly pastoralists.

The Jesuits offer in Rumbek training in ecology, basic electrical installation, sanitation, and basic computer packages.

They run St. Theresa’s parish, Holy Cross Centre and the chaplaincy at Rumbek Secondary School and Rumbek University.
