South Sudan soldiers took Fangak from rebel forces yesterday morning after a two-day bloody battle that cost huge loss of life.
SPLA spokesperson Colonel Philip Paguer Panyang told SCR News over the phone this afternoon that the army is again in control of Fangak, in Jonglei state, and the area remains calm after two days of heavy fighting.On Wednesday, forces loyal to Commander George Athor occupied Fangak after they expelled the residents from the town.
They also attacked Door, in Fangak County.
Mr. Paguer said that at least 105 people where killed during the clashes in Fangak and Door.
In Fangak’s battle, there were 89 deaths: 39 civilians, including women and children, 20 soldiers and police officers and 30 rebels.
There were also 95 wounded: 65 civilians and 30 military.
Mr. Paguer said Mr. Athor’s forces retreated to Kolnyan and Koliet where the former SPLA general is based.
Mr. Athor took arms against the government after he lost his bid for the governorship of Jonglei and accused the SPLM of rigging the results of April 2010 elections.
