The Governor of Lakes State asked the Government of Southern Sudan to choose Rumbek as the venue for the July 11 celebration of independence.
Chol Tong Mayay made this appeal yesterday during a press conference to express appreciation for the referendum results announced by South Sudan Referendum Bureau on Sunday, Good News Radio reported.Eng. Tong said Rumbek is a historical town home to the first secondary school in the south, the SPLA capital during the struggle, the venue for the signing of Southern Sudan Interim Constitution; and the place where late Dr. John Garang gave his last public address.
The Governor welcomed the preliminary referendum results, saying they express the interests of the Southern Sudanese.
Eng. Tong congratulated all who facilitated the referendum process, including referendum state committees, South Sudan Bureau and the national commission, political leaders, security officers, voters, members of the public and the media.
