North-based electricity technicians are behind the delay of the completion of the electricity supply project in Rumbek.

This was affirmed by Lakes State Minister of Physical Infrastructure, Joseph Maker Madit.

In an exclusive interview with Good News Radio, the Minister said that the technicians working on the three-Megawatt power plant left Rumbek for the North after running short of electricity poles.

He confirmed that the poles are in Wau expressing hope that the technicians who suspected violence during the referendum will be returning soon.

Mr. Maker said the electricity project was to be completed last December, adding that the remaining works require a maximum period of two months.

He added that besides the installation of the remaining poles, more transformers are to be ferried from Juba.

The Minister revealed that the two-generator power plant will sufficiently cover Rumbek.

He also said that he expects a 24-hour uninterrupted power supply, with consumers paying for the service.

He also remarked that the supply of electricity will help a great deal in conservation of forests, explaining that the need of charcoal by town dwellers has led to an increase in deforestation.

The completion of the electricity project was one of the promises of the present Lakes State governor during their political campaign in the April 2010 elections.
