The African Union will welcome the birth of an independent south Sudan, said the AU leader yesterday.
Speaking alongside President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Bingu wa Mutharika, who is also the Malawian President, told reporters yesterday that Sudan is an AU member and south Sudan is a new baby to the AU.He added that the AU will be the first to recognize the existence of South Sudan and others will follow as soon as the official results are out.
President Mutharika said that South Sudan’s future is bright because it has rich resources and friends in the AU and in the rest of the world.
The AU leader travelled to Khartoum where he met with president Omar al-Bashir.
He later travelled to Addis Ababa where an AU summit is in progress.
